The Oily Hair Struggle
It’s real.
You wash your hair in the morning, before you start your day. And come mid evening, it’s oily and ready for another wash. You’re envious of your friends who can go days without washing their hair and still look fab. It’s just not fair.
And the annoying “the less you wash your hair, the less oily it will get”. UGH! I get it. But I’m still going to look like a homeless person the day after I wash it. So what then?
I’ve been working on this… going a couple days between washes. I’ve accepted the fact that I’ll probably never be the girl who can go a week between washes. But a few days will do. There’s definitely a bit of a transition period that you just have to accept.
My GO-TO TIP for this transition period was to not wash my hair on my days off. I work in customer service and rely on tips, so being somewhat cute is a bit of a priority. My days off are my days to be a little gross (greasy hair and my Skin Detox) I just throw my hair up in a messy bun and no one is going to care. Choose whatever kind of days work for you where you don’t have to care or feel a little self conscious of how your hair looks.
Also, after letting your hair get really gross for a few days… that first wash is O.M.G. You’re hair will feel SO good and be so thankful afterwards!
So, as real as this struggle is, I’ve found a few products that really help me prolong the time between washes.
A LIGHTWEIGHT SHAMPOO. I love John Frieda’s brilliant brunette moisturizing shampoo. It might not work for everyone with oily hair, but I’ve always gone back to this one. Just like your skin, you hair needs moisture and oils EVEN IF it is oily. And I also just love the smell and price of this one 🙂
THE ROOTS/TIPS METHOD. I shampoo only the ROOTS of my hair and condition the ENDS. Conditioner just adds more buildup and can weight your hair down, so avoid using on your roots… at least frequently (every few washes I’ll condition my whole head). And unless you’ve actually gotten your hair dirty, you really don’t need to shampoo the ends. As oily as my hair gets, the ends get quite dry.
SURF SPRAY. I’ve been obsessed with using surf spray for as long as I can remember. Bumble and Bumble’s is my favorite because it doesn’t get sticky or add any weight. I spritz mainly my roots while my hair is still wet. Then brush it through, and blow dry. (I have to at least blow dry my roots or my hair looks lifeless) The spray helps to kind of dry up your hair. By the end of the day, I’m virtually oil free!
OIL. You know I love oils. And again, seems like a weird thing to be adding to your hair when that’s exactly what you’re trying to avoid. But your hair still deserves to be loved even if it’s kind of an asshole. I apply just a little bit of Marrakesh Argan and Hemp Oil to the ends of my hair and light run my hands over the top of my head. Honestly, I haven’t tried many hair oils, but this ones is super light and makes my hair insanely soft. It also smells amazing. Bonus! I found their shampoo/conditioner were too heavy for me. But the oil is a must!
I know a beauty blender has nothing to do with this post, but DAMN! Look how fresh!
Little pleasures.
Now that mother nature has taken a break from shaking my house (we’ve had a couple earthquakes this morning up here in the Yukon) I’m going to go NOT wash my hair and ruin my beautiful new beauty blender.
