A Stay-Healthy Guide for the Babe Who Hustles
In an ideal world, we would all have a slow, relaxing morning with a matcha and a healthy, balanced breakfast. We’d take our time, get a workout in while listening to a podcast, and after a quick shower and full skincare routine, we’d skip off to work with a #Fab4smoothie in hand. That evening, after having friends over for another healthy, balanced meal, we’d get some yoga in, unwind in a detox bath, and go to bed by 9pm.
But let’s get fucking realistic.
I’m sure at least 90% of you reading this are working more than one job/side hustle. Or you’re maybe working shift work or something that has you running around and on your feet all day like a server, a nurse, a retail worker.. Maybe you have a full time job AND have kids. Maybe you’re in college. Or college AND working… the possibilities could go on!
And on top of all of that, you have a social life! Friends to see, bf/gf’s to be present for, family obligations…
You’re not getting a good nights sleep every night. You maybe only have time to hit the drive thru on the way to work. Sometimes a week might be too crazy and keep you from going to the gym.
I used to get called lazy for sleeping until 11am when typically, I would get home from work just a couple hours before most of the world was waking up to start their day. Sometimes it would be nearly 4am when I’d get home. And by the time I washed up for bed and would unwind from the night, it would be 6 by the time I’d go to sleep. And SOMETIMES, I’d get home from work at 4am and be back at it by 9am. You think that’s healthy?
I’m sure many of you can speak to this!
It’s so easy to watch these people living leisurely lives on Instagram and thinking they’re doing everything right. It’s so easy to feel like you’ve failed by 7am when you realize you’ve slept through your alarm and have to choose between showering or making coffee.
YOU’RE NOT ALONE.
In fact, I’m sure you’re far less alone than you think you are.
Even when your day has you tied up or maybe doesn’t go exactly as planned, it’s okay! There are still ways to keep yourself balanced. For a lot of people, it’s not just a day that gets hectic, it’s their entire lifestyle that get’s hectic.
I think it’s easy for people to think “well, I already couldn’t go to the gym today… may as well eat some fucking cake!” No no no no no.
You’re busy, you’re swamped even. Your job demands late nights and/or early mornings. And your social obligations keep you from doing things you’d actually like to do. So when it comes to making healthy decisions, do that as a favour to yourself. Your body and mind do so much for you to keep up to your lifestyle… reward them by showing them some love.
The Stay-Healthy Guide for the Babe who Hustles
Make some part of your day a routine
Morning or night – it really doesn’t matter! (Although, a morning routine has been known as they key to success!) Make a portion of your day consistent! Make yourself a ritual. And really focus on what feels good to you. Just because it’s something you think you should be doing every morning, doesn’t mean you HAVE to. Maybe it’s coffee, some fresh air as you walk around the block listening to a podcast, and then jumping in the shower. Maybe at night it’s time to read, phone away, and a full skincare routine.
Schedule in relaxation
Listen, I know nothing sounds relaxing about scheduling in relaxation, but you just might have to! Even 30 minutes a day. Or at least a couple times a week. Mark it in your google calendar and have it alert you so you don’t forget!
Treat whatever time you wake up as the morning
When I was a server working all night, yes, 11am was first thing in the morning. It may be lunch to some people. But to you, still carry out your morning routine and take care of yourself as you would on a day you didn’t “sleep in”.
Try to avoid eating before bed
With hectic schedules come sporadic eating times. I get it. I’ve been there. It’s 2am and you haven’t eaten since lunch. TRY you hardest to avoid eating close to bed. YOUR bedtime. None of that “don’t eat after 7pm” bullshit. If your bedtime is 3am, please eat after 7pm. And if you must eat right before bed, try keeping it to something nourishing. Your bod will thank you.
Be aware of what’s in your coffee
If you basically have an IV of coffee at all times, keep it clean. Don’t be getting a caramel macchiato 4 times a day. Those calories, chemicals, sugars… they’ll catch up. (psst. My vegan cold-brew smoothie keeps you caffeinated AND fills you up if you’re in a rush)
Skip the drive-thru
Try to meal prep whenever you can to ensure you have fresh healthy meals ready to go when you’re in a pinch. If you MUST get something on the go, try grabbing a veggie tray or salad from the grocery store. Much better than a drive-thru breakfast sandwich!
Make time for a good-for-you hobby
Whether it’s yoga, cooking, reading, painting, spanish lessons… find something you love to do that feeds your soul and make time for it. Schedule it in as something to look forward to in your week.
Find a really good multivitamin
I’m still working on finding mine… but I have realized that with a busy schedule, it’s easy to be missing out on nutrients your body needs. Hell, that’s easy to do regardless.
Water!
If one thing stands true for any person and their health of any form…. staying hydrated will at least improve any situation. It’s the easiest good thing you can do for your body.
And most importantly: GO EASY ON YOURSELF. I see you out there, hustling. You got this. Don’t beat yourself up over one bad day. And if you’re feeling overwhelmed, take as much time for yourself as you can. Say no to people. Don’t answer your phone.
What do you guys do for a living? What’s your side hustle?? What are you doing it all for??
