Getting Tipsy: Skinny Cocktail Tips
Happy Holidays!! I hope everyone has had a wonderful Christmas! Β Right now is that awkward break between Christmas and New years. What day it is? Where am I suppose to be?
But the festivities are not over! There’s still day drinking, left overs, and the “I’ll start when January does” mentality. Enjoy this time but do NOT let everything slip. I wrote the other day about keeping your summer bod over the holidays. I mean it, guys. You can indulge over the holidays in a smart way without causing anymore damage before your start your New Years Resolutions.
A big part of this: Drinking.
The obvious way to avoid weight gain over the holidays would be to not drink at all (like, duh). But, you’ve gotta live a little. There’s parties, family dinners, events…. which typically means wine, champagne, and more wine. Β Have at er.
Before you go any further, my main piece of advice here before choosing your cocktail: BE KNOWLEDGABLE.
Sure, maybe you only had 2 cocktails. But they were loaded with creamy baileys and sugary liqueurs. (ew). Wouldn’t you rather have 3 glasses of wine with half the calories and a fraction of sugar??
Drink Skinny
Okay… the Quick facts:
Champagne – average 4 oz glass has about 89cal
Wine – Average 5 oz glass has about 120-125 cal.
NOTE: Most restaurants serve 6-8 oz… and double that if you’re pouring at home π
Tip: Dry wines have less sugar. Opt for a cab suav or sauvignon blanc.
Mix with soda water
You get that sip-able fizz, yet it’s still hydrating and NO sugar. Do note: although it can help hydrate, it contains a different amount of minerals than regular water and will not provide you with any nutritional benefits.
Ditch the juice
If you MUST, add just a small splash of grapefruit juice to your vodka soda. Better yet, squeeze a little fresh grapefruit or extra limes in there.
Need some extra flavour? Add these to your cocktail:
Cucumber: most bars will have this (and as an ex-bartender, I promise you, they don’t mind muddling or shaking this with your drink). Not only does it add a little refreshing flavour, it’s also hydrating! Goes great with a gin and soda.
Mint: Not just for sugary mojitos. Some mint and lime in that vodka soda will make it next level!
Pepper: SO good in your cucumber gin&soda. Also: pepper helps aid in digestion, boosts weight loss, and improves cognitive function (we could all use a little more of that after a few cocktails)
Craving a desert drink?
Skip the baileys and coffee with a sugared rim and added whip. Instead, order a Van Gogh (espresso vodka) on the rocks. Tip: make it a double.
My fave drinks without a sugary mix?
Old Fashioned – Try this bourbon infused maple syrup old fashioned. Muddle the syrup with bitters, add the bourbon, and stir with an orange peel. My favourite drink to cozy up with
Margarita – Try this one with freshly squeezed limes and a splash of water
Earl Grey Martini – skip the simple syrup for a sugar free cocktail in this Earl Grey Sour.
And of course: Drink water!! Drink a glass of water for every drink or vino you have.
Happy In-between Holidays!! XOXO
