Baby, it’s Dry Outside – ALL the skin hydration
WTF guys. I just realized it’s been like 12 posts since I’ve talked skin care… That must be because I’ve been slacking.
As humid as Cape Breton is, and as oily as my skin can get, even I am noticing the effects of the change in weather on my skin.
Also, with the recent move into a new place, we were insanely busy which led to poor eating habits, stress, and lack of sleep.
WELL! Has it ever started to show. And I’ve whipped out (and by this, I mean unpacked) all my necessities to fix this problem (and by problem, I mean, my face).
If you have oily skin, and it’s beginning to appear even more oily, that’s because it’s DEHYDRATED!
Your skin will produce oils when it is lacking hydration. SO yes, you still need to amp up the moisturizer or you will show signs of aging the way dry skin does.
This time of year, you really need to start slathering it on. Don’t skip steps.
You can keep it simple really. I’m not advising you to go and change your entire skin care routine. Just find the right products to help amp up that hydration and to encourage you to take note of what your skin is telling you it needs.
Basically, just pay attention. And know: What goes on your skin is as important as what goes in your bod.
Okay, sometimes my bathroom counter looks more like a kitchen pantry….
Here’s what your skin is going to need to make it through the winter
Coconut Oil – I’m sure you didn’t see that one coming…. you HAVE to be incorporating this into your skin care. I keep a container of it in my shower and use it as makeup remover. And then cleanse. Coconut oil can clog the pores on your face, so make sure to cleanse it off. BUT it removes every bit of makeup (even mascara!!) and leaves your skin soft and dewy. Use as a body moisturizer immediately after your shower.
Hydrating Moisturizer – Find a moisturizer that focuses on hydration. Most lines will come with three different levels: one for oily skin, one for normal/combination, one for dry. Go up a notch. I usually buy the one for oily skin. In the dry weather I go for more of a normal/combination moisturizer for an extra kick. And at night: USE A NIGHT CREAM. Your skin loses most of it’s moisture at night so it’s important to apply something heavy before you doze off.
…okay… I’m gonna try to go the rest of this post without a word containing “moist”… *shiver*
Eye Cream – You’re not too young. You’re just not.
Hydrating Face Masks – Who doesn’t love to pamper themselves? Make sure when you’re doing a face mask, at least once a week you’re using a hydrating one. Here are some of my faves:
Lips – Apply lip balm throughout the day. I love this lip butter from Korres. It’s so easy to forget this step. If you need motivation to remember: Fall/winter is the time for a dark lip – You don’t wanna be the girl with the dried, cracked lip stick.
Hands – It’s easy to forget the signs of aging when it comes to our hands, but they appear there too. Make sure to apply lotion throughout the day, and at night, a heavy salve before bed.
Re-hydrate your face – I LOVE LOVE LOVE this hydrating rosewater face mist. There are other brands out there too but I’m obsessed with this one from Mario Badescu. AND it’s only $10! Can’t go wrong. Spritz throughout the day to re-hydrate, give yourself a little glow, and it even kind of wakes you up a bit…. or at least makes you look that way. Spritz spritz
