My Honest Experience With MONAT Hair Products
Last fall I became a Market Partner with one of the most controversial hair care companies out there: Monat. When I began sharing with people that I was using the products, my inboxes were flooded with questions, and mostly, concern.
“Girl, don’t use that! It makes your hair fall out”
(No it doesn’t! I talk more about this here.)
” Is it filled with chemicals?”
(Nope! Naturally-based, vegan, non-toxic. MO(dern) NAT(ure))
“I hear it makes your hair super greasy”
(The “detox” phase can sometimes do that to you. I’ll tell you more about combating this in a bit)
Listen, I didn’t go into this blind. I had heard it all. I knew all about the lawsuits (which by the way, Monat has never lost a single law suit). I had heard about it making your hair fall out. I also heard both extremes: either “I LOVE IT!” or “I HATE IT!”
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t at least a bit skeptical, but I personally knew so many people who’ve had insane results with the products as well as incredible success with the business. And I mean, a company doesn’t have over 1 million VIP customers if their products make your hair fall out, right?
How I Got Started
So, last fall, right after I had Emmett, I couldn’t handle anymore hair loss. I had postpartum hair loss after Lily, plus a bunch more due to stress. Not to mention, my hair just sucked. Super oily roots, dry, static-y ends. I couldn’t take it anymore but I also just though that was normal.Β Is it normal to hate your hair?
The timing couldn’t have been better. Monat has JUST launched their skincare line and I was dying to try it. My cousin-in-law (that’s a thing, right?), Lynn, gave me hers to try and within just a few days, my skin changed so drastically that I didn’t care that I was a new mom on maternity leave…. I needed all of it! And, I was ready to commit to trying the shampoo.
Knowing I was going to be blabbing about the skincare all over my blog and instagram, Lynn, mentioned it might be a good idea for me to sign up as a Market Partner. Lighbulbs went off! Of course it was a good idea! I remember very clearly though, saying, ” I’m probably not going to talk about the shampoo though because hair just doesn’t excite me”
……..
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Okay.. so I get my products. I grabbed the Intense Repair Shampoo and the Intense Repair Conditioner because that line in particular targets noticeably thinning hair and hair loss. My product pack came with the Rejuveniqe Oil and this shit is a game changer… but we’ll get into that more in a bit.
Month 1 of using Monat
Full disclosure: Didn’t love it. But here’s the thing: I already hated my hair anyways. So, I figured, I could go back to using my drugstore shampoo filled with chemicals and hate my hair OR I could use this naturally-based product that’s healthier for my hair, hate my hair, and potentially get great results. Obviously, I was sticking with it.
Why didn’t I love it? My hair felt a little waxy… I get into this more here where I talk about how MONAT actually works. But in short, as the product works to remove buildup and silicones from old products, your hair can sometimes feel a little bit greasy or waxy. It’s not noticeable to look at, but you feel it. This process doesn’t last long, and although it can go away on it’s own, there are a couple super simple tricks to combat it! One of them is the Rejuveniqe Oil. This is what provides your scalp with all those nutrients, but it also works to balance the ph of your hair. (It’s magic.)
Month 2 + 3
I remember feeling the buildup on my scalp and noticing what looked like dandruff. Obviously didn’t love that, but a few overnight scalp treatments with the oil helped it completely! After a short while, my hair felt cleaner than ever. I remember the moment when I realized how healthy my scalp really felt. As for the “shedding” phase you can go through as your follicles become unclogged and get rid of dead hair that’s been stuck (read more about that here) I couldn’t tell how much I was really experiencing that because I knew I was still having postpartum hair loss.
But my scalp felt healthy and my hair was more balanced… no more oily roots and no more dry ends.
By about the end of month 3, I started noticing my follicles opening up… like I could actually see them! And I was getting little baby hairs coming in.
Month 4
My hair was full of shine, light weight, balanced, strong, and my scalp felt so healthy
Month 6
So I was sitting in bed one night scrolling through old photos and I realized how much regrowth I had had…. and in such a short time!! I mean look at these photos! And, for the record, the “before” photos on the left were when I was already 4 months in. So that’s 4 months in vs 6 months in.
Once the regrowth starts happening, it reeeeally starts growing.. FAST.
I think one of the biggest things that has people confused when it comes to MONAT, is that we’ve never really been educated on HAIR CARE. We talk about self care, skin care, healthy eating… but have you ever heard anyone talk about the health of your scalp? The health of environment in which your hair grows is crucial. Personally, I feel that other than talking about getting regular trims and doing a coconut oil mask (btw, ew. This sucks. Let’s be honest) we’re only taught on how to style our hair to hide our problems.
Also, can we talk about how impatient we all are? We want results now. Right NOW. I get it. We use a skin treatment and the results are practically instant. But when I hear people saying “I used it for a few weeks and had no luck” I’m like… girl. Listen. How fast has your hair ever grown in a matter of a few weeks?
Hair takes time to grow. And MONAT is no quick fix. It needs to work to deep clean your clogged follicles, unclog them to open them up, and kind of act as a fertilizer to provide your follicles with the nutrients they need to help your hair grow.
