Energizing Spirulina Smoothie
Is that not the GREENEST smoothie you’ve ever seen? It has to be good.
If you’ve checked out my Superfood Breakdown – along with many other popular “superfoods”, I broke down the perks of adding spirulina to your diet. (Go check it if you haven’t already!)
One of the most appealing benefits of spirulina for me, is the energy boost it gives. I’m a coffee addict. I can literally drink a latte and take a nap. It’s ridiculous. I’ve been trying to cut back and not be so dependent on coffee throughout the day (I love you, green tea…. but you’re just not the same).
In the superfood break down I mentioned I had been working on a spirulina smoothie recipe for you guys. I’m not gonna lie…. the taste can be very overpowering and unappealing. I’ve always loved it in the juices and kombuchas I’ve tried, but the first couple times I tried it in my smoothies, they ended up down the drain. That was just because I went a little overboard on the measurements and simply mixed it with the wrong flavours.
Just to recap a few health benefits:
- natural energy boost without the crash
- high in antioxidants
- detoxes heavy metals
- eliminates candida
- can help to prevent developing cancers and chronic illnesses
- lowers blood pressure and reduces cholesterol
Okay
Now for the smoothie…
1 banana
1 cup frozen strawberries
1 handful spinach
1 cup almond milk
1 tbsp almond butter
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp honey or agave
small splash pure vanilla extract
1 tsp spirulina
lots of ice
Throw all ingredients in a blender, blend well, and sip away!
DON’T FORGET! Top with your favourite superfoods! I like bee pollen and hemp seeds. (cocoa nibs would go nicely too 🙂 )
